Roasting Coffee - Green Beans

Bean Selection

Selecting the right green coffee beans is a pivotal step in achieving a flavourful and satisfying roasted coffee. Here's a concise guide on how to choose green beans for roasting:

Origin - Consider the coffee's origin as it greatly influences flavour. Different regions produce distinct profiles – whether it's the bright acidity of Ethiopian beans, the chocolatey notes of Central American varieties, or the earthy tones from Indonesian beans.

Bean Variety - Explore different coffee varieties, such as Arabica and Robusta, each offering unique flavour characteristics. Arabica is known for its nuanced Flavors and lower caffeine content, while Robusta tends to be more robust and carries a stronger, sometimes bitter, taste.

Processing Method - The method used to process the beans, whether washed, natural, or honey-processed, impacts flavour. Washed beans often have a cleaner taste, while natural processed beans showcase fruity and fermented notes.

Altitude - Beans grown at higher altitudes generally have a more complex flavor profile. Altitude contributes to the development of acidity, sweetness, and overall bean density.

Bean Size and Density - Look for beans of uniform size and density. This ensures even roasting and consistent flavour development.

Moisture Content - Opt for green beans with an ideal moisture content, typically between 9% and 12%. Too much moisture can lead to mould, while too little can result in a flat and dull flavor.

By considering these factors, you can tailor your green bean selection to your taste preferences and roasting style, unlocking the full potential of the beans during the roasting process.
