The Wonderful World of Coffee

Grinding Coffee Beans

Growing Coffee

Coffee plant growing is usually done in large commercial operations and, thgese days in many parts of the world. But coffee is grown mainly in latin America and Africa.

The two types of coffee plants are Arabica Coffee - Coffea arabica - and Robusta Coffee - Coffea canephora.

Vietnam is the world's largest producer of Robusta coffee, whilst Arabica coffee is endemic today grown in dozens of countries between the tropics.

Coffee plantations are first established in cleared forestland or at least, modified forests. The young coffee plants are spaced in rows so that the density varies between 500 and 750 plants per acre.

Seedlings (or cuttings) are generally raised in coffee-specific nurseries and are planted at the start of the rainy season.

It is some 3 to 4 years before they start producing fruit.

Coffee Varieties include Robusta coffee which is generally used for major supermarket, instant coffee products, whilst Arabica beans on the other hand, has the reputation of being swester, smoother taste and is therefor used in the better coffee shops.
