First 'Proper' Coffees
Backpacking across Australia...
In October 2006, we went to Australia for a 12 months backpacking trip. It was an amazing experience! From travelling around the country - particularly the east coast, we sampled many, MANY coffees.
The best available (at that time) was from Gloria Jeans. A company started by Gloria Jean Kvetko in Chicago, Illinois in 1979.
It was their coffee that first sparked our interest in owing and running a coffee shop, with a view of course, to one day, owning and runing our own coffee roastery and coffee shops.

Working with specialty coffee beans - the top 1% quality coffee in the world - we were committed to offering premium quality, fresh roast coffee. As well as quality nuts in a range of coatings and forms, we also offered a range of candies and cakes.
But just as important, was the relationship we had with our customers. Most visitors came as regularly as clockwork. Was it the coffee? Or was it the friendly yet profession way in which we served them? We think it was both. We should be perfectly able to provide both.

The Wood Roaster
Yes! Roasting coffee beans with a wood burning roaster!
Wood raosting is something we hadn't come accross until we established a working relationship with The Wood Roaster in Marrickville, NSW.
We feel that roasting using wood has harnessed a power that unlocks exquisite flavours in the beans.
Many gas roasters can result in an uneven roast thus giving inconsistences in flavours and blends.
At The Wood Roaster, we’ve mastered this by using an air roasting approach through our custom built, fully temperature controlled roaster, fuelled by wood!

So now, the thought is to establish a common public area for ANYTHING COFFEE that we and you can dip into to find out and ask questions on any subject to do with coffee.
On The University of Coffee website, we will over time, place any and all information, instruction and advice we can find, so that YOU can educate yourself on all aspects of coffee growing, coffee roasting, coffee grinding AND making great coffee for yourself, your friends and your family.

Roots Coffee Lounge
Roots is community focussed hospitality at its best. Roots is a not-for-profit organisation set up to support the R.E.A.L Foundation Trust, a local charity which in turn, supports young people with additional needs and disabilities. All proceeds from Roots go to the Trust. Roots also offers training opportunities for young people who have faced barriers in education. And who will benefit from supported stepping-stones into employment.
With ample seating for regular visitors whilst also having large meeting room tables for business use. Should you ever want to treat your team and bring them out of the usual office environment. Our not for profit status is reflected in our prices and your custom will directly support the young people we work with.
The small team is headed up by Phil Henley. A complete coffee guru who has overseen the running of cafes and coffee roasters in Australia and now back in Nottinghamshire.
Phil has a wealth of knowledge to share. The team love to talk and help educate everyone on coffee and its journey to your cup. They are also keen to hear your comments and what the space could mean to you. Team meetings, workshops, clubs and societies, can all have a place at Roots.
